Athabasca University's Centre for Science (known until year 2000 as the Centre for Human and Natural Science) is an academic unit devoted to education and research. Its courses are primarily offered by asynchronous distance education for home study, but onsite labs are offered as part of some courses. Most courses are at freshman level, but higher level courses are offered in some subject areas, primarily human science and mathematics. A very limited number of remedial courses is offered, with the bulk of courses being accredited university level 3 credit courses. The B.Sc.[1] is offered as a general degree or with specialization in human science. Individual subject areas covered include Astronomy [2], Biology [3], Chemistry [4], Geology [5], Physical Geography [6], Mathematics [7], Nutrition [8], Physics [9], and Statistics (designated MATH[10]). Some general science topics are covered in courses designated SCIE[11]. Some courses include a laboratory component loaned to students by the library so that lab exercises may be done at home.
Research is performed in the subject areas taught, with emphasis on the Athabasca River Basin. Specialized facilities include a laboratory kit preparation lab, a general purpose lab under renovation in 2010, and an auroral observatory.
